Season 2019 did not have a dream start for Sanna Nuutinen as she missed the cut in four of her five first LET tournaments. The turning point of the season came in early August when Sanna won the Amundi Czech Ladies Challenge LETAS tournament in the Czech Republic. She then claimed two podiums on LET in the Czech Republic in August and in Spain in September and finished the season with a top10 in Spain and a top20 in Kenya.

— Had someone told me in April that I would be 21st in the LET order of merit, 2nd in the LETAS ranking and go from 500 something to top 300 in the world ranking by the end of the season, I would not have believed that person. My goal was to secure a strong category on LET for the following season, and that I managed to do with flying colours, Sanna comments her two-fold season.

Improved technique and intensive tournament schedule keys to good results

Sanna has been working systematically on her swing technique with her coaches for a long time. At some point during the summer this process started to bear fruit, and particularly her driving improved clearly.

—I was able to drive the ball longer with a varying shot selection. Driving became my definite strength. Also my distance control with wedges improved a lot thanks to regular quality practise with the help of Trackman. As I participated both on LETAS and LET tournaments, I gained a steady competition routine. With my swing in good shape, I was able to concentrate on just playing the game.

Olympics a big dream

After a short winter break Sanna will start preparations for the new season. In addition to indoor training in Finland, she will probably head some place warm for outdoor practice and play. The tournament season will start with two LET competitions in Australia in late February. Before that there are two LPGA tournaments also in Australia, which Sanna is considering to seek access to through qualifications.

—I will soon sit down with my team to set the goals for the next season. Olympics have been a big dream for me since I was a little girl, so making the Olympic team and doing well in Tokio will certainly rank high on my list of goals for 2020. A top 5 position on LET ranking is another prospective goal. According to preliminary information that would give me a direct access to the final stage of the LPGA qualifications next fall.

Of individual tournaments, Scandinavian Mixed in Sweden in June and Scottish Open in July will be quite special. Scandinavian Mixed is a joint event of the ET and LET where men and women will play for the same prize fund of EUR 1,5 million for the first time. Scottish Open is an event co-sanctioned by LET and LPGA, which I will be able to participate for the first time.  I have a very exiting season ahead of me that I already eagerly look forward to.
